Amaryllis

FAQ’s

+ How do I care for my Amaryllis?

When first growing your Amaryllis bulbs make sure that there is always a little bit of water just underneath the bottom of the Giant Amaryllis. This will enhance the growth of the stem and flowers. Place your vase in a sunny place where the sun can shine abundantly. The Amaryllis is a tropical plant and grows best in warm temperatures. 75º Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for them. Within 2 - 4 weeks you should see the first flowers growing.

While your Amaryllis plant is growing, you can support the stems if they begin to get longer than 15” otherwise the stems may break and ruin your beautiful flower.

3 months after purchasing you will likely stop seeing blooms. This is when you can begin following steps for regrowing your bulbs for the next season! The steps for regrowing your bulbs always depend on your environment and climate zones as well as the condition of your bulb.

+ How much water do I add to the Giant Amaryllis?

For the potted Giant Amaryllis or Amaryllis in the vase, care should be taken not to over-water. These require very little water – too much water can cause the bulb and its roots to rot as the young bulb has reduced absorption capabilities.

Most of the nutrients and water the flower will need to bloom is already present inside the bulb. But helping it along a little can't hurt.

+ What should I do after flowering?

After flowering the bulb is almost ‘empty’. So to encourage flowering next year it is very important that the bulb builds up new reserves. This resting period allows new flowers to develop from the bulb.

Optimal rest would include (very) good light conditions and preferably a warm climate, averaging 70F to 80F during summer.

Step 1.

After flowering, clip the wilted flower from the stem. Do not remove the foliage.

Step 2.

If the plant is in a small pot, replant the bulb in a large pot, at least twice the diameter of the bulb. Use a good quality drained planters mix or peat moss.

If the bulb is already in a wide pot, replanting is not necessary.

Step 3.

Water regularly, using a basic plant feed every two month at a low rate.

Step 4.

About 6 to 7 months after flowering, move the plant to a cool location of 50F to 60F for a period of 3 months (indoors or outdoors) temperature is by far the most important.

Step 5.

Water very moderately to keep soil slightly moist during two months. Stop watering after these two months. The leaves may remain green, but may also gradually dry off. This is perfectly normal and not a problem.

Step 6.

After 3 months, move the plant back to 70F to 80F, cut off the foliage and dry the top the neck with a tissue to prevent neck-rot.

Do not water again until new leaves and flower stems appear.

Step 7.

After 8 to 10 weeks the Amaryllis may flower again.

Repeat these steps after every flower cycle.

+ What is the best environment for the Amaryllis bulbs?

The optimal environment is a room with a lot of natural light with temperatures between 68-77 degrees (F).

In the early weeks prior to sprouting, it is ok to place the potted bulbs in a dark place if the temperature is within range.

After leaf and flower stem(s) begin sprouting, a lower temperature can be beneficial as long as sufficient daylight is available.

+ How to water a waxed Amaryllis?

The waxed amaryllis requires no water - honestly! The bulb has plenty of nutrients to last the season. A waxed Amaryllis bulb is completely self-sustaining, blooming with no care whatsoever. The waxed bulb contains all the water and nutrients it needs to flower. It can stand directly on any flat surface.

Prefers direct sunlight and consistent room temperatures.

+ Can waxed Amaryllises bloom again?

With the correct aftercare, they may bloom again!

Step 1.

After flowering, gently peel the wax and balloon off the bulb. Clip the wilted flower from the stem. Do not remove the foliage.

Step 2.

If the plant is in a small pot, replant the bulb in a large pot, at least twice the diameter of the bulb. Use a good quality drained planters mix or peat moss.

If the bulb is already in a wide pot, replanting is not necessary.

Step 7.

After 8 to 10 weeks the Amaryllis may flower again.

Repeat these steps after every flower cycle.

+ How do I prevent the Amaryllis from toppling over?

The Amaryllis grows toward the sun, so rotating the plant weekly during its growth will help ensure that the plant grows upright.

+ Cutting stems after blooming.

Amaryllises do vary in the amount of stems they produce. As you may know, more stems means more reproductive potential. We have had some with three stems! However, having just one stem can be a good thing because the bulb may have more energy left to grow another stem and new blooms.

When your flowers have bloomed, cut the stem off near the bulb and let nature do its work. There is a pretty good chance there's more to come.

An Amaryllis can live up to 75 years if cared for properly! They are gifts that keep on giving.

+ Annual planting and flowering cycle of the Amaryllis for the Holidays

Step 1.

Plant the bulbs in the second half of October or when temperatures will remain 70-80 degrees (F) for the next three weeks. This consistent is needed for rooting and sprouting.

Step 2.

After three weeks, temperatures can be slightly lower. Offer limited water.

Step 3.

To bloom for Christmas/holidays, give more water to maximize flower size.

Step 4.

After flowering, remove old stems. Now the bulb must grow and flowers must develop inside the bulb for the next season.

Step 5.

From this period until the beginning of August, there should be good light conditions, temperatures of 70-80 degrees (F), regular watering, and a little bit fertilizer every two months.

Step 6.

At the beginning of October, bring the plant back to a warmer place (70-80 degrees (F)). Remove the leaves, and start watering slightly after you see visible leaf and stem sprouting.

Step 7.

Your Amaryllis will bloom at Christmas/holidays.

Repeat these steps every year and replant in fresh peat every three to four years after the cool period.
